Digital x-ray imaging
Few things are indispensable in dental practice and so helpful like your x-ray equipment. Since the first medical applications of x-ray, these tech went through for many changes and have shown their value in daily clinical duties.
As a student, my dental school though me the advantages of having digital dental x-rays available at dental office, but when I started my private practice my budget was not to enough, so I left my dream. I had to save money for a long time to afford one of my own and bought it 5 years ago.
Immediately, my new gadget show their potential improving my diagnostic capacity, my operative precision and the most important characteristic, it is a powerful tool to improve communication with the patients.
An x-ray is worth a thousand words
It is completely unnecessary to discuss the diagnostic value of dental x-ray. What I emphasize is its inherent capacity to make easy the patient understanding. Sometimes it is difficult to demonstrate the necessity of treatment to our patient of his own condition only by words, there is where the image is even more important and powerful to transmit ideas.
So better the image, better the communication with the patient. Soon, I realize that I improve my communications skill using digital dental x-rays and increase my incomes with this simple investment.
Digital dental imaging era
The grandfather of a friend of mine, who was a dentist in the early years of past century, give me some old radiographs as a gift. If you have the opportunity to see an old dental radiograph you can see the differences. It is difficult to distinguish details when you compare them with newer ones. The quality of imagine it is completely increased. This feature permits the clinician complement his capacity to diagnose tooth decay and periodontal disease, which, as we know, it is possible to miss them in clinical exam.
Edition and amplification is a reality with digital imaging. You can enhance contrast and use colors to get an easy understanding of the image. Also less radiation to produce the same quality, elimination of chemical processing and improved storage capacity because the digital format, are some benefits that have come with digital imaging era. Moreover, you have to consider ecological benefits of no using toxic chemicals and less paper waste.
Digital dental x-rays imaging requires new technology. Sometimes you must replace you old x-ray unit to achieve the lower radiation exposure used for digital radiography. X-ray units recommended for use in digital radiography should have the following characteristics: the smallest focal spot possible, an accurate timer capable of producing very short exposures, direct current with 70 kV setting or below and 5 mA or less and rectangular collimation.
Since the second half of the 80’s digital imaging became more accessible to clinicians. Despite higher cost more and more dentists have seen the value of having such tool in the dental office. I believe in the coming years digital imaging will become a common tool in dental practice all around the world.
