Have you ever been in a career that you feel that you were born to be in it? For me dentistry has been that career in my heart since my childhood. It is not hard to think of it since I come from an extended family of 7 medics. Everybody in my family grows knowing that they will end up in the medicine field and the only choice you have to make is which medicine field to go into. For me it was being a dentist and I have lived to the dream and my parents and 2 siblings are so proud since I am the first dentist in the family tree.
My week of work
I never have to spend my entire week in one working station. From Monday to Wednesday I am at my regular station which is only a stone throw distance from where I live. On Thursday to Friday I go Luke’s private dentistry where I give him a hand in dealing with his week’s backlogs. He pays me well and he loves my able hands.
Luke never stops tempting me to come and work in his clinic full time but I like the shifting since it keeps me facing different challenges. I also work in some night shifts at Monroe’s where I get a chance to handle bigger cases which add to my CV’s weight. Over the weekend I get caught up to give hand at my different dental clinics. That is my summary of a week and as you can see it is flexible. But sometimes it gets so busy that I wish for a little break to have a nap or some time to relax.
My typical day
My normal day begins at 6 am when I have to wake up. I usually take a routine run around my neighborhood since I’m always conscious of my health. By 7:30 am I usually have my breakfast and by 8am I the first at the office. I grab coffee before I review my first case. By 9am I attend to my first patient. In a busy day, I could handle up to 5 cases before lunch break. After the lunch break things normally get slow and if I get more than 3 cases then that must be a busy day.
My official day ends at 5 pm but my workmates say that I’m the workaholic since sometimes I leave the office as late as 7 pm. I like to research so I take the extra evening time to go online or read books about dentistry. Before I forget, on Tuesdays is the day to meet with suppliers and manufacturers to realign our working arrangements.
I love hypnosis
At college I learned about sedation but they are not one of the best for patients. I took a keen interest in hypnosis since this does not require any sedatives for dental processes. It helps alleviate any fears that patients may have and it has worked wonders so far for me. There is never a good justification than when patients appreciate what you do and that is why I try my level best to give all that I can do for them.
My most outstanding moment as a dentist
There was this lady who once came to my regular place of work with a dental problem. She said that she had been on a weight loss diet and that the toothache was messing with that plan.
I helped her to the best of my knowledge and she was grateful that such a young professional was so dexterous. She became a good friend of mine and I once visited her home where I met her daughter who was recuperating from breast cancer therapy.
Why it feel such a great career
Flexibility is one thing I love about being a dentist. You do not have to spend the entire week in one boring place as you have just seen with my working week. The other thing is that I meet different people every other day and they give me a reason to get going. They always appreciate what I do and that is something that rarely comes in most of other careers.
Well, I may not like that sometimes I get so busy that I never have time for my family but this is something I chose so this is may not be a big deal.
